FUTURE PLANS AND RECENT ATTACK

Hi guys and gals. Well it's been awhile since we posted up on our development blog so here we go. I should probably begin by highlighting recent events. During November, PS was subjected to a series of failed hack attacks. Whilst minor cosmetic damage was incurred, the infastructure and security held strong as intended with no breach. You may have seen the odd broken link over the last couple of weeks. Sorry about that! Additional security measures will be added to our framework over the coming days to re-enforce our already stable defences but we are very proud to have marched through the attacks.

Anyway, enough said about that, we want to talk positive, and what a positive year this has been! 450% growth on sales, 600% growth on new sign ups and a whopping 800% growth on page views from 2009. We must be doing something right!

For 2011, Production Scripts will be starting the ball rolling again with developments. We want to provide our writers with the best possible tools to manage scripts online instantly and easily. We want to not only offer the tools to do this but tools to help you promote your work too, tapping into social networking on a greater scale. We hope to improve the buyers experience from beginning to end, building on what we already have in place. Watch this space!

Beyond that, we are always keen to hear from you, the users, with suggestions and feedback.

AFFILIATION COMING TO PS

We are currently working on setting up an affiliation service whereby users may earn income by displaying an official PS banner on their website or blog. This not only allows PS to get the brand name out there with creditable sources but also allows further added potential for writers to earn that little bit extra revenue doing what they love. Users, by displaying our banner, will earn a percentage of the total for every generated sale made using their banner. PS will be developing a full range of banners to allow the users an opportunity to fully integrate it into their own style. Full details to follow.

SERVER STATUS GREEN

It would seem *touch wood* that our server change brought up a few issues which we needed to fix along the way. Some of these issues we expected, some we didn't. The need for a new dedicated server was down to how much PS has grown over the last 6 months. Our traffic levels went quite literally through the roof. We also pushed our space capacity to the limits. With future plans to bring various things 'in house' such as the PDF reader, we needed to act sooner rather than later. We apologise for the issues created from the server move, but as mentioned, it was a needed requirement based on the growth of the service. We appear to have 1 or 2 niggly issues remaining which we are resolving, but the majority of things should now be operating as normal. What have have been able to achieve is a far superior setup behind the scenes, which in turn should allow for us to grow comfortably. Please feel free to continue reporting any issues you stumble across.

Production Scripts will be moving onto a dedicated server over the next fews days. As a result, we will be temporarily closing the website whilst the move takes place. All services will be temporarily unavailable during this time. Estimated downtime will be 24-48 hours.

ASM REVIEW SHORTLIST - JULY 2010

Production Scripts are delighted to announce the four plays shortlisted for potential review through ASM this month are: Conversations in the Mall by James Grob, Prom King and the Fiancee by Harry Burrus, Return to Vardia by Keith Passmore and Women on the Edge by Karoline Bethea-Jones. Four new scripts will be selected at the end of the month. Congratulations to the above writers.

LICENCE B OPT OUT & D/L ICONS ADDED!

Production Scripts today released the opt out option for Licence B (our youth licence). Furthermore, download icons have now been added to all active script listings showing what a download actually consists of filewise. Hopefully these roll-outs will aid the browser allowing for a more transparent surfing experience.

PS: SOME NEW TWEAKS ROLLED OUT!

We are delighted to announce our latest collection of "minor" fixes for the Production Scripts website. A couple of new features are currently under development and are not ready yet. For now, we have successfully rolled out the following tweaks to date:-

All new sign ups now have an opportunity to tell us where they heard about PS. We have bolted a selection of choices which should allow us to monitor our marketing campaigns more effectively.
'Other Scripts by..." has been removed for any writer who has 1 active submission posted on PS.
A tweek has been made to the Category numbers for added accuracy.
A new tag word option has been added to the script search page.
Tweeked the PayPal gateway for a smoother buyer experience.
Fixed the arrow positioning for 'Previous Sales' section under Writer Portal
Added a 'Search by Total Characters' on Script search. This totals up your female, male, and non-gender totals into a fresh search. So 1F+1M+1NON = 3.
Fixed the spacing on the Script Search page between Rating and Length filters.
Here's a biggy... YOU can now activate and de-active your submissions under 'Manage Scripts' in Writer Portal. You will notice a Green and a Red option, simply click on the button you require and update accordingly. We figured, as a playwright, you would appreciate this added control over your listings. You know what it's like, you submit a script, then spot an unfortunate typo (always the way). Last thing you want is to wait for us to make the changes whilst the script is still readable to the public. So this way, you can disable, and then put in a fix request to us. It's also good if you are offered an exclusive publishing contract elsewhere... you can go in yourself, and instantly disable your script submission on PS. Alternatively, if you want to re-activate... no problem, click on the green button and update. Instant. Done.
The Main navigational menu has been updated to now show a Forum link.

So what else are we working on right now?

Opt out option for Licence B - Youth Specific. Sometimes... "Adult Only" plays are not for junior eyes. So you will soon have the option to opt out of Licence B if you are submitting a specifically adult themed play. We didn't want this to be an automated thing though, because sometimes, youth theatre do like to tackle adult issues, and rightly so. Therefore, we've left it up to YOU. Do you feel your script is suitable for youth production? If not, opt out. Simple.
Writer Profile page add-on. Are you associated with an organisation? The Dramatists Guild of America perhaps? Soon you will be able to select from a list under Manage Profile in the Portal, and an icon will appear on your profile page showing you as a member. We are initially hoping to cover the key associations but please feel free to offer suggestions should we miss anything.
Script listing content icons. This is for buyers as our focus turns to making their experience the best one possible on PS. We are working on icons that will appear on your script listing pages. These icons will represent what a download consists of. So for a musical, perhaps a download includes a PDF Script, MP3 Files, Song Sheets etc... These icons will show this to tell the buyer what exactly is within the download. The majority of submissions will only have 1 icon... a PDF Script one, but for musicals, this is an essential upgrade. Often smallar community theatres will not have a band, but a CD player and so buying a musical only to find out there are no MP3 files, just song sheets I would imagine to be a little bit disappointing. Equally, if you have a fantastic band lined up and the download has MP3 files and no song sheets.

PS FORUM LAUNCHED!

Following feedback from a recently conducted poll, we are delighted to announce the launch of a new mini-forum on the Production Scripts website. The forum, although active, will remain in BETA test stage for the next few days whilst we continue to develop and test drive the functionality. Please feel free to have a test run yourself and be sure to report back any issues you find. The forum has been fully integrated with the existing membership database and profile pages, meaning that you may post using your normal PS login (no 2nd login required!). Further integration is on-going over the next few weeks including direct linkage to writer scripts allowing for seemlessly open ended discussions.Links to the forum can be found in both the My Account / Writer Portal pages, alongside a link placed at the bottom of the website footer. Over the next week or so, our menu system will be updated and a new banner will be launched to support this new exciting feature. For now, it's our secret!

EDITABLE CONTENT EXPANDED!

By popular demand, we have now released additional live editable content for all script submissions in the Writer Portal. Previously, you could amend pricing, opt out of Licence A, amend script rating, and change tagwords. From today, you will now also be able to edit Synopsis, Length (Duration), Female Characters, Male Characters & Non Gender Specific Characters. Please be aware that spacing within the Synopsis box is still under development. We hope to have auto-spacing tweaked shortly.

More developments coming over the next couple of weeks including some VERY exciting new features!

PRODUCTION SCRIPTS LINK WITH UK MAG

We can now announce that Production Scripts have teamed up with Amateur Stage Magazine. AS Magazine was established in 1946. The mag is published monthly and is the UK's only independent magazine for community theatre. It boasts around 20,000 readers a month. AS Magazine will be reviewing two to four scripts presented to them by us each month for each forthcoming issue. Any script submitted through us will automatically be considered for shortlist but ultimately we will base our decision against certain criteria which are:- Uniqueness, Quality of Script Formatting, Public / Seasonal Trend and View Rankings within PS. We will try to spread the shortlist across as many writers as we can over time. The first four scripts shortlisted for review in AS Magazines April issue will be announced within the next few days through our blog, our social networking pages, and the Scrolling announcer in Writers Portal, so be sure to keep an eye out. Oh, and in case you miss the review, Production Scripts will scan a copy and email it to the writer so that a copy may be kept.

NEW FEATURE: SCRIPT RATINGS

We are delighted to announce the roll out of the ratings module on Production Scripts. The ratings feature allows writers to grade their submissions by content. Options are Youth Specific, Family Friendly or Adult Only. This allows schools and youth groups to safely filter out scripts with potential adult themes. We are asking all writers to re-visit the Writer Portal and update their submissions through 'Manage Scripts'. Our Script Submission form has been updated to incorporate the grading system. Any scripts without a rating added will not appear in a filter search.

LATEST DEVELOPMENT UPDATES...

Wowzers what a busy month this has been (I'm pretty sure we always say this). I promised I would sum up a few of the key tweaks and developments rolled out across Production Scripts of late.

First to be upgraded was our home page banner ad rotator, we moved away from the classic basic HTML to turn our focus on next generation Flash. Although the banner rotator is Flash, the banners themselves remain as animated (now non animated) gifs. Plans are afoot to convert all our banners into lovely animated sequences. This upgrade gives us the capacity to really drive forward Banner promotion campaigns. This is where we clamp together scripts with similar tag words / descriptive / genre / price. By doing this, we build a pre-defined search pattern using the Banner ad as an attention grabber to pull the potential buyers in. Banner ads will be mainly aimed towards the buyers although occasionally we will launch a campaign for new writers to join us. Using this tool, we will be able to push script exposure to the max. Some campaigns will be aimed at attracting buyers to 'Individually unique scripts', particularly full length plays that do not immediately appeal to the cool crowd through association to popular culture (That sounded intelligent.)

You may have spotted our 'Featured Writer' module positioned mid-left of any Production Script page. We felt it was important to give as much exposure to writers as we possibly could. This directly taps into our recently released Profile Pages development and is classed as an "add-on". If you have recently added content on your page you will automatically be indexed into the Featured Writers section. To be indexed, your page must have content, and an image. This means that browsers are not faced with 101 default empty profile pages (which would be ugly and very un-interesting), and those writers who take the time to utilise this new module are rewarded with the added exposure. From our own viewpoint, It's always nice to read about our registered writers so be sure to add content to your page as soon as you can. Furthermore, it's worth noting that these pages will be indexed into all major Search Engines shortly. You'd be mad not to take advantage of this.

Recently added to both the Writer Portal and customer My Account pages are scrolling announcers. On the Customer side, we felt it would be a good opportunity to announce our Live Support whilst on the Writer side we are now able to use this to keep you informed on any web related issues / matters of interest directly. Have you visited the Bestsellers recently by the way? We've been expanding it! There's now a dropdown filter meaning you can drill down into sub categories. Most Excellent! Bolted to the infamous Script Submission form is a new field called 'Script Preview Percentage', we've noted that different writers have different ideas on exactly how much of their script they would like to show in the Preview. So we've added a filter option. So now the writer has the power to decide for themselves! We are on the verge of a terrific new development which should roll out shortly. We are VERY excited by it. Keep an eye on the blog for news regarding that!

Other non-development changes happening currently include watermarking of all Licence A scripts with "For Read Through Only" stampings and re-recording of our video tutorials to be made available on YouTube shortly. Stay tuned, March is gonna be great!

WRITER PROFILE PAGES LAUNCHED

Production Scripts are delighted to announce the launch of our newest feature. The Writers Profile Page allows playwrights to bolt information about themselves such as a biog, url links and an image onto their existing script submissions. The profile pages are fully editable directly from within the Portal. Each page has it's own unique static URL address which can be used as a personal homepage if desired. Each Profile Page will be indexed into all major internet search engines going forward to gain additional exposure for each writer. We recommend that all registered writers look to add content to their page. Please contact us should you find any issues.

REVIEWS MODULE ROLL-OUT

We have now tweaked the reviews module at production scripts. To the left you will see a snapshot of a standard script listing panel. All the usual stats are there such as Character numbers, Script Length, Tags etc, however we have now also added an average rating. This average is calculated from the reviews module. From this section, users may now browse related reviews or even add their own.

On the right you will see our newly tweaked review submission form.

Previously, the user posting the review would have been considered as the reviewer, now we have added seperate text fields for an external review name, details of that reviewer and a relevant internet source link (if required).

Further developments are planned regarding the overall navigation and filtering / searching of reviews. Those who have already submitted reviews are advised to contact us should they wish to add additional information.

TELL A FRIEND MODULE DROPPED...

We have today removed the 'Tell a Friend' widget box from all individual script pages. With the combination of general bookmarking, url linking and use of our social networking widget, we felt the 'TAF' module was pretty much redundant.

PANTOMIME LICENCE A DROPPED...

After much consideration, we have decided to drop our Licence A option from all Pantomime listings posted on Production Scripts. Alongside this change we will also be limiting the script preview pages. This is to further protect the writer from mis-use of their work. These changes will take place over the next few days. These changes will not affect any other listings.

Production Scripts have successfully converted all internal web page URL addresses to now be compatible with Google Search Engine Safe (SES). Whilst we are confident that compatibility should not be an issue, we recommend all users check any external links into Production Scripts to ensure they remain active. This concludes our foundation work ready for a big marketing led search engine push in the New Year. The secondary purpose of this exercise is to ensure each and every playscript is auto indexed into Google (and other key search engines). This will allow us to expand the playwrights exposure.

NEW ROLL OUTS ANNOUNCED !

Production Scripts are delighted to announce the latest developments now rolled out to the live website. Whilst the majority of upgrades are internal to aid administration of the service we offer, there are now a few external ones too as listed below:-

Firstly, we've added a 'Random' button under the Script Search page. This button allows browsers to be taken to any random script listed with us. It's particularly good for browsers who have no specifics on what they are searching for. We've also added a second 'Search' button below the drop down filter menus for ease of use.
We have now provided writers with buyer email address information via the writer's portal, we felt this was a valuable field required to aid playwrights monitor purchases made through our marketplace.
We have now added 'Email Notifications' to writers for scripts added to our database. Going forward, the writer should now be notified automatically as soon as a new script goes live with us. This should mean you no longer need to keep manually checking randomly.
Script category tweaking. Previously, under each category, we listed the last ten posted scripts for that specific category only, this has now been changed, we are now showing ALL scripts posted under that category in date order... newest at the front.
We have changed our mailing list set-up by splitting out buyers from writers. This allows us to give specific news and updates which relate. For buyers, we will commit to presenting a monthly newsletter outlining a list of all new scripts added that prior month. For writers, we will advise on service developments and general news that may directly affect you. Please be aware that all users have automatically been defaulted to subscribed under the new system, you may change this at anytime by login into your 'myaccount' and selecting 'unsubscribe'.
We have now rolled out a MAJOR buyer update which allows buyers to "convert" their existing licences to new ones. ie... if a buyer purchases a script under licence A, they can then simply convert into a licence B, C, or D and only pay the difference in price. This is a huge step forward in an area we really are focusing on more and more.

Hopefully we will be rolling out some more developments in the New Year, please watch this space for more details.

BUYERS POLICY AMENDMENT (02/12/09)

Please be aware that from today, Production Scripts will be disclosing buyer email address information to production details presented to the playwright via the writers portal. This will allow the playwright to follow up on any sales of their scripts directly with the buyer should they wish to do so. We have noted general feedback concerning a lack of production information submitted by the buyer in one or two cases, particularly surrounding Licence A purchases. For buyers, please be aware that we are now providing our writers with your registered email address for any purchases you make. Should you have any concerns over this policy change, please feel free to contact us on mailbox@productionscripts.com, live support, or via our contact form.

HINTS: GETTING YOUR SCRIPT SEEN!

We've certainly mentioned a few hints and tips for writers along the way of late, so I've decided to consolidate a few of them here on the blog just in case you are new or have missed our previous communications. When you first submit your script, it appears on our front page, but what happens a couple of days later when it's knocked off the front page?! Nothing, unless you are smart with your submission. Here are a few tips to keep your script visible:-

Always make use of all five tagword slots available to you. Around 85% of browsers use the tagword function to search for potential scripts ahead of any standard category breadcrumb.
Review the front page tag cloud to see what tags are currently popular, and what tags are not. The more popular a tag, the bolder and larger it shows, and the more likely browsers will click into it. Try to be clever with the tagwords you choose. For example, try using three popular tagwords, and two unusual ones as a combination. Larger tagwords will have more scripts associated to them, unpopular tagwords will have fewer.
Use a good strong image. Be creative. Purchase yourself a quality image that represents your work. A good powerful image will always attract the eye, and make your script listing stand out amongst others on the page.
Post up a strong synopsis to hook the browser. Not too long, not too short. Briefly outline the plot without giving too much away. This is crucial, a synopsis is a hook, make it good.
Format your script! There are many websites out there that give you hints and tips about how to professionally format a script. A messy script will not keep the browser interested. A nice tidy script, will go a-long way!
Use multiple categories and sub-categories. Production Scripts offer you the opportunity to post your script against two categories on the script submission form, if you feel you can submit to more then open up a support ticket and let us know. Same applies with sub-categories (genres)
Promote your listing! Your script has it's own unique web address, and we have provided Social Networking links for all the major players currently out there on your page to utilise. If you have a website, link page to our page, alternatively, link to the online script reader.
Bookmark and check our blog, we will be posting up help guides here first!

So there you have it, a few hints and tips for getting the most out of your script listing through Production Scripts. Shortly, we hope to roll out some developments to further assist you and your promotion drive. Watch this space.

Production Scripts are currently enjoying an explosive increase in traffic, sales, and script submissions following recent marketing activity across various social networking and partner sites. As we jog through the 19th day of October, we have already smashed last months sales numbers whilst greeting more registering of new writers than ever before. A truly exciting time, but we're not going to stop there! Further enhancements are planned for the near future, designed to improve the functionality and appearance of our site. Firstly, we have rolled out the new and improved Best Sellers Chart. Here, our chart now features current position, previous position, movement arrows and movement values. Whilst we are still bolting sales to the chart currently, all future sales will automatically be accounted for and calculated. The chart will auto update every Sunday at +00:00 GMT.

We have also added a secondary tag search function on the Script Search page as requested by some of you. With this, you may now search for one tag word as normal, with the option of adding either and/or options thereafter for additional tag searches.

Our most exciting enhancements is on each individual script list page itself whereby you will now see webbed hyper linking for Male Characters, Female Characters, Gender Non-Specific Characters and Script Length (Duration). Like Tag words, browsers may now click into any of the above script stats to bring up similar results. This gives the browser a very useful additional search tool.

CROSS TAG SEARCH ADDED!

Today, we have succesfully rolled out a new enhanced cross search module for tag words. Now users may select more than one tag word of choice and search accordingly.

Alernatively, users may now also search for one tag word OR another tag word through preference. This roll out went live yesterday. Please feel free to offer feedback on this latest development and keep an eye on our blog for further advances.

We are currently pulling together a series of video tutorials to aid with navigation across Production Scripts. The tutorials will show live step by step video guides on how to submit scripts, create an account etc. We will also be introducing more advanced tutorials which highlight Writer's Portal functions alongside special 'Tip guides' to ensure that your script list gains the best possible exposure to browsers. JUNO MAILBOX ISSUES

Evening folks. We have noted recently that anybody interacting with a juno.com web address may experience technical difficulties with failed emails and rejected script submissions. This is due to a "filter" on our web server which blocks communication between productionscripts.com and juno.com. We are currently working on a fix for this issue and hope to have juno.com users back up and running as soon as we can. Thank you for your patience.

TAG WIDGET EXPANDED

Today we expanded our home page 'Popular Tags' widget box to show 8 additional tag words. This takes the total viewing capacity from 50 to 58. Further expansions on the Tagging are being looked into due to their popularity.

We've now revamped the script search text box so that, by default, all word or phrase searches will include checks against everything within Production Scripts rather than just tag words or script titles as previously set up. So in affect, every visible wording within the site such as synopsis descriptions and categories will now be automatically indexed within the search function. This will give the user far greater accuracy with searching by text word and the writers a little more exposure.

ROYALTY BOOST FOR WRITERS!

Now we have managed to roll out the basic service functions of Production Scripts we find ourselves in a better position to estimate the market based on research, our costs, and observations. Initially we didn't want to enter promising high royalty rates only to then find out we couldn't meet them so we purposely went in fairly low. Having fully reviewed our costs, systems, rival market, and general demand, Production Scripts are delighted to confirm that all royalty payments to writers will be raised from 40% to 65% with immediate effect. The Writer's Portal will be upgraded over the next day or so to show this positive change, and sales that have already been logged will be adjusted accordingly. We have already amended our Conditions, About and FAQ pages to show this new and improved writer's payment rate of 65%.

Introducing our latest enhancement to the Writer's Portal. The script statistics have now been revamped to include page view stats in real time broken down by listing. Also included is a built in mini chart to see positions against surrounding scripts. Enjoy!

Over the next day or so we will be rolling out our latest feature within the Writer's Portal. The new function tool will give writers the ability to access real time stats and statistics from within our records database. To begin with, we are releasing stats on individual script page views. Here, writers may monitor popularity of their listings by comparing total page views against other listed scripts. This is the first development stage of our Writer's Portal tools expansion and, of course, the upgrade is completely free of charge. Please be sure to offer us feedback on this new feature once it goes live.

The 256-bit encrypted security certificate error reported on computers using the Internet Explorer browser has now been fixed.

SUBMISSION FORM TWEAKED

We've now managed to establish that the issues surrounding the script submission form are purely Internet Explorer based. So if you're using Firefox or Safari for example, you'll be fine. We now think we've found the problem causing the upload failure of image files. A few tweaks of the code have been made and now we should be back up and running for sure this time. Once again, should you experience any further issues please report them to us.

ONGOING SUBMISSION ISSUES...

A few users yesterday reported to us that our script submission form is still a little on the buggy side. Although we fixed the original issue, it now appears that the form may not be fully compatible with the Internet Explorer web browser. Tests have shown that script submissions worked with both Safari and Firefox yet IE failed. So we're currently working on a fix or workaround.

We have today expanded our 'Popular Tag' widget to now show the 50 most used script tag words from 25. We felt this particular search entity adjustment was beneficial to both the customer and writer, and with scripts being added daily, our drive towards "choice" now allows us to do this.

Hey folks, we are delighted to announce the successful roll-out of the following enhancements to ProductionScripts.com today.

LIVE CHAT SUPPORT
On each page close to the footer, you will now see a new widget added to the left hand side of your screen. This is our new Live Support function. Here, you can now talk to one of us directly in real time through a pop-up chat box. When the widget icon shows as ONLINE this means an admin is available to take your enquiry, when it is OFFLINE, you will be guided to a form submission page.

Links to the new Live Chat support have also been added to both the user 'My Account' page and the 'Writer's Portal' area.

MUSICAL FILE UPLOAD SUPPORT
As from today, we have made amendments to our online script submission form. The form now supports a third upload box. This box is for anything musical related such as score sheets, audio samples etc.

After much thought we have decided to remove our '5-Minute Play' category from Production Scripts altogether. Demand appears to be low for such a category, and we felt that 'Sketches and Skits' more than compensates for that void. We may bring it back at a later date should demand rise. Meanwhile, if you can think of any categories you would like to see added, please let us know.
